Lugol's solution 5% iodine + potassium iodide 10%

Lugol's solution is a solution consisting of 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodide, supplemented with deionized water. It contains iodine as an essential trace element. Iodine solution has been used since the 19th century both for wound cleansing and as a household remedy.

In addition to its use as a disinfectant, Lugol's solution is also used to detect starch. Iodine is poorly soluble in water, so potassium iodide is added to improve the iodine's solubility.
