Lugol's solution 2% iodine + potassium iodide 4%
Lugol's solution is a solution consisting of 2% iodine and 4% potassium iodide, supplemented with deionized water. It contains iodine as an essential trace element. Iodine solution has been used since the 19th century both for wound cleansing and as a household remedy.
In addition to its use as a disinfectant, Lugol's solution is also used to detect starch. Iodine is poorly soluble in water, so potassium iodide is added to improve the iodine's solubility.
